It's Too Hot

I didn't sleep well last night.  It's been so unseasonably warm, and I find myself waking up at night, sweating.  At one point I told myself "If I wake up again tonight, I am going to jump in the shower to cool off and then go back to bed."  It didn't come to that.
They're doing work on my building, so I had trouble sleeping past nine.  I did some writing, I blogged here.  Various nosies were made outside.  It got quiet again, so I slept a little.  Then there was noise in the hallway, and I remembered they were doing on that too, and I cursed my inability to sleep like a normal person.
Now I'm very tired and don't have time for a nap.  And I am probably going to go out tonight to hang with friends.  And I'm not sure I'll have the energy to enjoy it.  Curses.

Told You So

Last night, I was sitting in the lounge watching tv when Ruth came in.  She was drunk, and giggly, because her drunk is always giggly.  And she had a problem.
A few weeks back, she had gone out with a guy over dinner.  And then the next week, drinks.  And then the next week, drinks again.  I told her this was all a bad idea, because he was paying for things, and that meant there were certain expectations.
Ruth was totally thick when I said that, and I tried to explain to her that going out with a guy multiple times, like this, implied they were dating.  Ruth and Jenny decided this was ridiculous, that's not how it works.  Lavvy, thankfully, sided with me, saying that this guy (Ruth won't even give me a name because she's paranoid I'll track him down, which is so strange, because I honestly didn't even think that until Ruth made the suggestion) probably does think they're dating, and that's the important bit.
I told Ruth she needed to have a face-to-face meeting, gently tell him she's seeing someone else and that she would like to be friends and drinking buddies.  Ruth never likes this idea.  She doesn't want to meet face-to-face, she'd rather send an email.  (This always causes me to wonder what is wrong with her; who the hell sends emails like that in this day and age?  What is this, 1997?)  Then I suggested that she just not-subtly mention her boyfriend, as a way of indicating his importance to her to this guy friend.  No, she just gives another exasperated sigh.
So last night, after getting drunk together, this guy tried to kiss Ruth.
"I told you so," I said, as I sat there.  Ruth apparently told him, in her flummoxed state, that she had a wife, which she explained to me and made no sense.  It might have been the drunken state.
Ruth went into a bit of a rant about boys and how stupid they are and how they always manage to find her.  She told me about this guy named Ben, who is coming to visit soon.
"I'm going to make Ben and this other guy meet, because then they'll see their stupid behavior within each other and then themselves and then they won't chase after me."
I disagree.  I suspect that these guys are not going to get that they are both being ridiculous, and instead, they will just see that the other one likes Ruth and it'll turn competitive.
(As a side note, what do you readers think about this?)
She told me some stories about when her Dad had cancer and she was crying and Ben kissed her, even though he had a girlfriend.
"Wait," I said.  "I though crying was a turnoff for guys."
"Really?" said Ruth.  "I've found it's a great way to get guys.  It probably makes them feel all needed and protective."
Oh great.  It's not enough for a guy to like me, I have to make him feel like he's being a man and protecting me.
We giggled for a while, talking about other things like our work, and she complained to me about this essay she's writing and we were relatively merry.  Then one of the spazzier women came in wanting to watch a tv documentary about 2012.  (I'm so not even kidding.)  We let her, even though she apologized twenty times and tried to get us to stay.  I explained to her that we were fine and were leaving anyway.
I wish Ruth would have listened to me and nipped this thing in the bud.  Something tells me there's going to be a lot more drama on the way, even if she does avoid this guy as she's decided to.

Breakfast, Then Bed

I should have realized last night, when I woke up with a sore throat, that I was sick.  But instead I rolled over and fell back asleep.
When I got up this morning I felt awful.  I had a headache, the insides of my ears hurt, I was stuffy, my throat was still sore, and I was tired.
But I went to breakfast anyway.
I was honestly hoping just to get in and out of breakfast as quickly as possible, maybe drinking an extra cup of orange juice so I would feel better.  Baw.
Anna decided she wanted to sit with me.  I told her I was sick, hoping to deter her, but it didn't.
What I should have said was that I didn't have the stamina to have a polite conversation.  Anna's okay, but I get the feeling nothing is going on in her brain, or at least nothing worth mentioning.  She has sort of this weird voice.  I get the feeling she is trying to imitate a Valley girl, but mostly it just comes out as really annoying.  And she laughs at like everything.  I was not in the mood to deal with her, but I was trying to be nice.
Part of the reason I don't spend time with Anna is because she has nothing to really say.  She just complains about school or talks clothes, and I would rather die than hear her complain about a teacher.  When people I respect critique a teacher, I consider it, especially if I've never had that teacher.  When someone who strikes me as mindless does, I'm suspicious.
Sharon recently complained to me about how stupid people are around here, and for a long time I wanted to believe better, but she's kind of got a point.  There are only a few standout people who are really bright or interesting; so many other people are dull.
Tamar came over to sit with us briefly too, and she talked about this Healthy Snack Week we have going on.  Basically, they're giving away free "healthy" snacks, though Tamar complained that cranberry juice wasn't that healthy.  Tamar is always in a rush in the morning so she left pretty quickly.
Finally, I got away from Anna.  I spent all weekend not seeing or talking to people at meals, and then today, the morning I wake up, one of the people that would actually sit with me and irk me chooses to.
I went back to bed after breakfast.

Drinking Money

My roommate went out drinking last night. Who goes out drinking for five hours on a Wednesday night?
And where in God's name does she get the money for alcohol? I go out about once every two weeks and try to confine myself to fifteen dollars (though I sometimes manage to make it twenty.)

Roommate Troubles

When I was younger, I started leaving rooms when I got really angry.  I didn't have to do it a lot, but occasionally I did.  I did it mostly to allow myself the time and space to calm down.
At around one in the morning yesterday I realized I needed to do the same thing.  So I grabbed my key and left.
I ended up in one of the common rooms, watching television.  The screen was all snowy, but I watched part of an episode of Stargate Universe, which I had actually never seen before.  I tried to concentrate on the show and not what was making me angry, although my mind kept wandering back to my problems.  I hate this.
By the time I went back to my room, I had a compromise in mind.  It was too late to do anything about it tonight, so I tried to sleep.
And couldn't.  Again, even though I tried to concentrate on sleep, my mind was wheeling around problems.  This is both a good and bad feature.  Good in that I can usually quickly figure out how to fix something.  Bad in that I have a hard time thinking about anything else, and when I'm trying to sleep, not being able to relax is bad.
But also because, well, the problem was my sleep.  There's a lot of noise on the street below us, even well into the night.  My roommate won't let me close the window at night because she says she gets too hot.  And then the noise keeps me up.  (It apparently doesn't bother her one bit.)  Instead of her, say, not wearing winter pajamas to bed, which would be an obvious way to fix it, she said something that angered me last night, which is what prompted the retreat.  I was trying to be the better person, but trying to do that was meaning I was up half the night, the sound of ambulance sirens and car door alarms keeping me up.
I tried to tire myself out.  I have all sorts of tricks that sometimes work.  I got on my computer for a half hour, hoping the harsh computer glare would make my eyes tired.  No luck.
Around 4:30 this morning, still awake but in that state of "dear God, just let me sleep," another set of sirens went off and I finally shut the window.  It took me at least another half hour, but I finally fell back asleep.
She woke my up in the morning, opening her drawers and doing something strange with liquid.  (Every morning there's a glug, glug, glug sound and I find myself wondering why she can't do that in the kitchen, since that is where she is heading next.  I am trying to be patient, but I am stunned by how generally inconsiderate she is.  When she is sleeping and I'm awake, I try to do things that are either inherently quiet or if they aren't and they have to get done, I try to do them as quietly as possible.  Every morning she must open and close at least six drawers.)
I got up then because it's not worth trying to fight it.  I just got up and waited for her to close her drawers enough to let me walk past.  Once she was out of the room to get her breakfast I changed and got breakfast myself.
I was tired at breakfast this morning.  My eyes were doing that itchy thing that tells me they're red and that I'm tired.  I didn't really feel like talking to anyone.  I thought about offering her a compromise, trying to decide which one would be the best.
When I got back to the room, I sat down at my computer and started doing my usual morning routine of catching up with the news.  And she left.  I was going to offer it to her this morning, but she's gone.
Part of me is still really angry.  Like, ready to pick a nasty fight angry.  But the other part of me so wants to make this work, since other then the noise thing, I mostly don't mind her.  I can try to forgive the early morning wake up if I can just manage some decent sleep in the first place.

Last Night and This Morning

Right before going to bed last night, Nina asked me to help her with her English.  "Just correct me, okay?" she said.  I couldn't see her in the dark, but surely she could see me, with the light on.  She sounded a little sad.  I felt sorry for being impatient with her.  "Sure," I said.  I turned the light off.
I am still having trouble sleeping, though last night it was mostly everything else.  I am very sensitive to noise, and last night there was so much noise it took me a long time (hours) to finally nod off.
And then I was up early because Nina was up early, getting ready for work.
I tried to lay down again after having breakfast with Ruth, Rachel and Jenny, but then Ruth texted me.  She wanted to go see a movie; did I want to come?  I asked her where it was and it was far off, but I said I'd think about it.
I really shouldn't go, because really, I have essays that need editing and phone calls to make and more writing to do and I suspect there's some reading, but...I do want to go.  Spending time with Ruth and all.
I just feel sort of terrible right now.  I'm not sure if it's the lack of sleep or if I'm hungry.

Ain't No One Like Him

Given last night's post about Pete Seeger, I thought I'd share this link to an article about him by Studs Terkel.  I wish I could write something as true and loving as this, even about someone else, but I'll just let the words speak for themselves.

Law and Order: Lansing

I realized last night that I probably watch and read way too many crime procedurals and mysteries when I started imagining what it would be like if some of my friends and myself were in one.
Paul and I would be partners, natch.  Paul would be the logical one, solving crimes like Holmes himself.  I'd be all intuition and channel Mulder.  Juicebox would be like Munch, the cool customer.  (Actually, imagining Juicebox as Munch is really funny, since he's nothing like Munch except in the calm presence way.  But I feel like everyone would want to watch a show where one of the characters is called Juicebox.)  And then I could totally see Nate and Josh as partners a la Ryan and Esposito.  (Ryan is cute and silly like Nate, Esposito is more serious but still gets into trouble like Josh.)  Da-DUM!
Oh yeah, I've been watching too many mysteries lately.  Though, I mean, really, is this any stranger than imagining some of my friends as old people?  And, at least I didn't imagine anyone as David Caruso from CSI: Miami.  (Jeff?  Totally.)

Dinner with Dad

Last night I went out to dinner with my Dad at this bistro down the road from where we live. It was mostly nice. It's a fairly new place, but there were a fair amount of people there, and there was even a man playing covers of classic rock songs. ("You can't always get what you want...")
I had fish, even though what I really wanted is steak. We have very little meat in our house. The caf spoiled me terribly, and I often find myself craving something higher in protein. This is especially ironic, since my Mom believes my lack of protein is why I have such terrible hair.
Mostly, my Dad talked to me about plans for the future. That's all anyone can talk to me about these days. It's sort of frustrating, since I'm already bored with my future.
He wants me to retake the GRE, since he thinks it's the best way I can guarantee getting into grad school. Maybe. I suspect it has less to do with me and more to do with money.
I noticed that one of the waiters was watching me from his seat at the bar. Seriously, boys, I can tell when someone is watching me and trying for me to not notice. Don't bother hiding it.

Last Night's Wit

Last night, my Mom had some friends over for a craft marathon.  My Mom loves making stuff like that.
I'm not a huge fan of all my Mom's friends, but a lot of them seem to think I'm hilarious.
They were discussing my Mom's boss, Cherrie, who I hate.  Among other things, Cherrie likes to tell people who aren't Pentecostals that they're going to hell.  Obviously, as someone who believes in religious tolerance, I have little patience for this kind of stuff.
Cherrie's what I like to call a Pharisee, one of those Christians that thinks that she somehow is better than others because of her religion.  (The name is a reference to a parable of Jesus covered in Luke 18:9-14).  Wrong.  She just likes to use religion to justify her own behavior.
Anyway, Elizabeth (one of my Mom's friends) and my Mom were discussing Cherrie, and my Mom refrained from saying anything bad.
"You know," I said "It's okay in this household to call Cherrie a selfish bitch.  It's the truth."
"You go girl!" Elizabeth said.  Yeah yeah.
Later on in the evening, my Mom asked me if I had a zip drive she could borrow.  "Sorry," I said.
"You lost my purple zip drive."
"I didn't lose it.  I just don't know where it is."
Elizabeth thought this was hilarious.
In truth, I'm almost certain my zip drives are in a particular backpack.  If not, they're buried with a bunch of my other college stuff.
