One of my ex-roommates sent me this great comic featuring Cthulhu. The art is so cool and it's a cute little joke at the end.
Obviously, the only problem is that I'm posting this a little late.

(Un)Interruptions
My roommate's been missing for the past few days. She's been coming around to get something and then immediately leaves. She hasn't, as far as I can tell, been sleeping in her bed.
I'm not sure how to interpret this. On one hand, it could be that she is just crazy busy or has a new boyfriend or something. On the other hand, it could be that she's angry at me and instead of talking to me, has just decided to leave. (She has a sister nearby; maybe she's staying with her or at her place?)
It's hard to know what Nina is thinking, as she is in and out so fast. She has a set schedule during the week. She's usually gone by nine in the morning. This morning she came in the room at around ten, which, in all my time living with her, she's never done. I was totally surprised to hear her come in. (I was trying to sleep. She seems to hate that I am such a fan of naps, although I've decided to nap only when she's gone.)
I am enjoying getting full nights of sleep. I had forgotten how satisfying uninterrupted sleep is.

More Window Drama
Last week, I said some mean things to my roommate about the window situation, and then, it was fixed. It was nice, and I was pleased I had finally gotten through to her.
Then it was open last night. It was a nice week. I already miss it.
Everytime I think "Okay, now this drama is over," it comes up again.
I'm hoping she goes out and gets drunk tonight so she can't control anything.

Drinking Money
My roommate went out drinking last night. Who goes out drinking for five hours on a Wednesday night?
And where in God's name does she get the money for alcohol? I go out about once every two weeks and try to confine myself to fifteen dollars (though I sometimes manage to make it twenty.)

President's Day
The only lame thing about President's Day was that my roommate had the day off too. Luckily, she was in and out for the first part of the day.
Midway through the afternoon she came home and messed around in the bathroom. I could hear the water running and various banging noises while I was working on some writing and watching tv.
When I went in there later, I discovered she had bleached some of her clothes, which was why it smelled a particular way.
She sort of disappeared for a while, and I made another attempt at a bubble bath. She kept coming in and out of the place, and I was so afriad she was going to burst into the bathroom. After awhile, she decided to get on her computer to talk to someone. It was a little awkward, but I got dressed in the bathroom and then went to dinner.
So, no, I didn't really do anything for President's Day.

Point for Stupid
I've been wondering over the last few days if my roommate is stupid or mean. It's sometimes hard to tell with people, and often I've found people who blend various ratios of stupid to mean in their behavior. (In September, a young man asked me about a school I didn't get into to make me feel badly about myself, forgetting he himself was in his fifth year of schooling that was meant to last four. It was both mean (trying to make me feel badly for a recent failing) and stupid (forgetting that in comparison, he actually looked equal or worse, depending on your interpretation.))
In any case, last night Nina was doing her laundry. She mentioned to me that she realized she was warm because she was using a warm blanket and that if she wanted to be cooler she shouldn't use it or use a lighter blanket.
So, one point for stupid then.

Roommate Troubles
When I was younger, I started leaving rooms when I got really angry. I didn't have to do it a lot, but occasionally I did. I did it mostly to allow myself the time and space to calm down.
At around one in the morning yesterday I realized I needed to do the same thing. So I grabbed my key and left.
I ended up in one of the common rooms, watching television. The screen was all snowy, but I watched part of an episode of Stargate Universe, which I had actually never seen before. I tried to concentrate on the show and not what was making me angry, although my mind kept wandering back to my problems. I hate this.
By the time I went back to my room, I had a compromise in mind. It was too late to do anything about it tonight, so I tried to sleep.
And couldn't. Again, even though I tried to concentrate on sleep, my mind was wheeling around problems. This is both a good and bad feature. Good in that I can usually quickly figure out how to fix something. Bad in that I have a hard time thinking about anything else, and when I'm trying to sleep, not being able to relax is bad.
But also because, well, the problem was my sleep. There's a lot of noise on the street below us, even well into the night. My roommate won't let me close the window at night because she says she gets too hot. And then the noise keeps me up. (It apparently doesn't bother her one bit.) Instead of her, say, not wearing winter pajamas to bed, which would be an obvious way to fix it, she said something that angered me last night, which is what prompted the retreat. I was trying to be the better person, but trying to do that was meaning I was up half the night, the sound of ambulance sirens and car door alarms keeping me up.
I tried to tire myself out. I have all sorts of tricks that sometimes work. I got on my computer for a half hour, hoping the harsh computer glare would make my eyes tired. No luck.
Around 4:30 this morning, still awake but in that state of "dear God, just let me sleep," another set of sirens went off and I finally shut the window. It took me at least another half hour, but I finally fell back asleep.
She woke my up in the morning, opening her drawers and doing something strange with liquid. (Every morning there's a glug, glug, glug sound and I find myself wondering why she can't do that in the kitchen, since that is where she is heading next. I am trying to be patient, but I am stunned by how generally inconsiderate she is. When she is sleeping and I'm awake, I try to do things that are either inherently quiet or if they aren't and they have to get done, I try to do them as quietly as possible. Every morning she must open and close at least six drawers.)
I got up then because it's not worth trying to fight it. I just got up and waited for her to close her drawers enough to let me walk past. Once she was out of the room to get her breakfast I changed and got breakfast myself.
I was tired at breakfast this morning. My eyes were doing that itchy thing that tells me they're red and that I'm tired. I didn't really feel like talking to anyone. I thought about offering her a compromise, trying to decide which one would be the best.
When I got back to the room, I sat down at my computer and started doing my usual morning routine of catching up with the news. And she left. I was going to offer it to her this morning, but she's gone.
Part of me is still really angry. Like, ready to pick a nasty fight angry. But the other part of me so wants to make this work, since other then the noise thing, I mostly don't mind her. I can try to forgive the early morning wake up if I can just manage some decent sleep in the first place.

Language Problems
My roommate, Nina, sometimes asks me for help with her English. She was texting today, and she asked me if she could say "If you need any help, don't bother asking me." I explained that she probably should say "If you need any help, just ask." She does this frequently: say the opposite of what she means, which sometimes makes determining her actual meaning hard.
I kind of wonder how she functions as her job. She works at an English newspaper, so how does she get on? I would be impossibly in trouble if I worked at a non-English newspaper.
She told me last night she wanted to learn Chinese, which is admirable, but since she's here, I personally think an English class might be a good idea. It's clear she has the vocab, but she needs to practice speaking, and well, there are classes (or coffee table nights) that cater exactly to that.

Cocorific
I started watching Conan back in middle school, back when they would play him in the evenings before the previous night's Daily Show. I loved him and spent a lot of time thinking he would make a great boyfriend just because he'd be random and strange all the time, but in an endearing way, not in the creepy or embarrassing way that sometimes happens.
So, yeah, I'm excited for Conan to be bringing sexy back, even if I don't really have a tv right now.

Some Thoughts on Halloween
Today has been one of those days where I find myself running a lot of errands. I first walked over to a Halloween shop to pick up a couple of things for my Halloween costume this year. I still don't have it done, but I'm thinking it'll be ready soon. I've decided to do something relatively simple this year, just because I've been so busy.
A lot of my female friends talk about how Halloween is sort of an opportunity to dress slutty without anyone saying anything about it. (At least not to their face. As much as I hear people talk about dressing slutty, I hear just as many complaints about the slutty dressing.) Although I have problems with the whole concept of slutty, I decided years ago that Halloween would be another opportunity for me to be a feminist and express myself through fantasy.
You know what my fantasy is? To be admired and noticed, but not for being slutty, or even sexy, but for being strong and powerful. Usually that's what my costumes are all about. Strength and power. I am demanding your gaze and I'm also demanding your respect.
This year, I decided to go for something more utilitarian, because I'm expecting to move around a great deal, so comfortable shoes, something I can potentially run in, but still have fun. It's going to probably end up being more cute than about strength and power, but I'm okay with that because of my limited time this week and because of my circumstantial constraints.
I digress. I was in a Halloween shop, and of course I want to buy everything. I love spooky things, I love black, I love all the Gothic stuff, I love a cute pumpkin. I went in and looked around a little. They had cups that said "Zombie Potion" and candelabras. They had this giant spider with hair covering it, and it looked so adorable I just wanted to give it a hug.
I wish that Halloween was a longer holiday. As much as I enjoy giving gifts to friends, I wish we'd switch it so that Halloween was a long holiday and Christmas was short. I want to have a whole week to wear costumes.
I also wish I had money now to just splurge on lots of things for all year. I like clothes as a way to express oneself artistically, and I was thinking that maybe I should consider costumes. Costumes are usually made of cheap material, but in wearing something meant to be a costume I redefine what clothes means, making all clothes seem like ultimately some kind of costume. Which could be cool.
I'm thinking of investing in wigs. Apparently dying one's hair changes it forever and the color isn't as rich anymore. I don't want to dye my hair, but I do want to change it occasionally, and I was thinking maybe I should buy the occasional wig. Something fun, something I could wear to a club even.
I finally stopped daydreaming about Halloween and bought what I needed, then I hightailed it over to the post office. (Got stuff to send.) And then went over to do some shopping for things for my place. (Don't rely on roommates to get stuff.)

Text Bombing
I spent the evening with Erin and Nori. Erin recently moved into this new place, so I was unfamiliar with everything. Earlier in the evening John and Liz had stopped by. Liz wanted to go to Pinball Pete's, which I had never been to.
One of the few regrets I have about college is that I didn't do as many social things as I wish I had. I spent a lot of my Saturday's working on homework, which is really sad. It panned out, I guess, in that I had excellent marks, but now that I have nothing better to do, I find myself wanting to make up for lost time.
Liz said they'd be back soon, so the three of us waited around for her to call us back. I find myself wanting to go out to the bar and try new drinks and have some nice conversation.
Erin decided she was going to start text bombing people. What this apparently involves several people texting someone else a nonsense phrase. Erin first decided to try Matt (which I wished she wouldn't, because I still have to talk to him and have tentative plans to hang out with him in a few days), and then focused her energy on Jonathan, her roommate.
"Where is John?" I asked.
"Luda," Nori said.
What? "Luda?"
"Ludacris."
Oh, man, I really must be getting old. I had no idea that Ludacris went by Luda now.
Matt texted back, asking what this was all about. Then Jonathan, who doesn't even know my number, texted me back some choice phrases.
Then Erin and Nori started telling me stories about their hometown. I've heard so much about it at this point that I suspect I could talk about it like I lived there. (Though I think of this as a good thing.) They started on Hannah Bethel, who I though was a fictional person until they showed me this:
It's not a bad song, per se, but it's not really impressive either. It just seems to be a rehashing of a bunch of tropes common in country music. Also, the backroads thing just makes me thing of inappropriate things.
"She's not that good," Nori said. I agree, but mostly because my favorite music is the stuff that is different from other things I've already seen.
Erin and Nori and I played mop baseball, which is this game we made up where you take a mop and try to hit a bouncy ball.
Then we went up the stairs to Erin and John's room. It was a mess in a way that reminds me of every picture I've ever seen of Kurt Cobain's homes. The only nice thing was this beautiful mural on the wall and ceiling of a tree. Whoever did that did a really nice job. It looked great.
As we were talking, I was spouting off hilarious zingers after another. I don't know why but sometimes I get into this mood where everything that comes out of my mouth is funny and strange. "You don't have to act like you're in a sitcom," Erin commented. Okay, I guess that's my cue to tone it down a little.
Nori was playing all this cool music. Nori herself is a musician, and a very talented one. I love listening to her stuff. "I wish I was twenty-one," she said. "So that I could go out dancing."
I feel the exact same way. I always want to go out and dance.
